
Meherpur: A district court on Sunday sentenced the Gangni municipal mayor Ariful Islam to 10 years' imprisonment in an arms case.
According to the prosecution, mayor Ashraful Islam went to the house of Mokbul Hossain MP to shoot him on 27 May, 2012, but Mokbul was not at home at that time.
Later, Rapid Action Battalion members and police jointly raided the house of Ahraful and arrested him.
Police also seized a gun, two magazines and three bullets from his house.
Later, SI Sirajul Mostafa logged a case with Gangni Police Station under Arms Act.
On June 16, 2012, SI Narayan Chandra Gosh submitted the charge-sheet to the court.
After examining the records and witnesses, special tribunal sub-judge Tajul Islam found him guilty and awarded him 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.
Additional Public Prosecutor Advocate Rustom Ali expressed his satisfaction after the verdict.
