Saratoga Springs junior Kelsey Chmiel took first place in the Junior Women Under-17 four-kilometer race at the Great Edinburgh Cross Country Meet on Saturday in Scotland.

Chmiel topped the field with a time of 14 minutes, 10 seconds, just ahead of European runners Mariana Machado and Jasmijn Lau, who both had times of 14:13.

Wrestling: Ballston Spa's Tyler Barnes and Shenendehowa's Stevo Poulin both took first place in their weight divisions at the Eastern States wrestling tournament at Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake. Barnes, the top-seeded 170-pound wrestler entering the tournament, defeated Paul Calo of Southington with an 8-2 decision to take the title. Poulin pinned Central Valley Academy's Mason Bush in a time of 5:08 to win the 99-pound championship. Orion Anderson of Schuylerville/Greenwich also made the finals, but was pinned by Wyoming Seminary's Beau Bartlett in the 126-pound championship. Out of the eight Section II wrestlers to make day two of the tournament, four lost their quarterfinal matches, including Shenendehowa's Kiernan Shanahan (145), Niskayuna's pair of Eoghan Sweeney (160) and Reggie Melvin (195) and Duanesburg's Zach Lawrence (145). Michael Gonyea of Columbia advanced to the semifinal round at 126 pounds but was pinned by Bartlett, who went on to pin Anderson in the championship.

Girls' basketball: Shenendehowa defeated Henry County (Ga.), 73-50, at the Say Yes to Success Tournament in Brooklyn. Cameron Tooley scored 27 points to lead the Lady Plainsmen. Henry County came in to the game as the second-ranked AAAA girls' basketball team in the state of Georgia.

Boys' basketball: Tariq Minix scored 13 points to help Hudson Falls earn its first victory of the season, 65-44, over visiting Johnstown in a Foothills Council contest. The Tigers are now 1-11 overall and 1-10 in league play. Matt Boyle scored a game-high 17 points to lead Johnstown.

Boys' ice hockey: CBA nipped Saratoga Springs, 3-2, in a Capital District High School Hockey League clash. CBA jumped out to a 3-0 lead heading into the third before Saratoga rallied to pull within a goal. Miles Demarais, Collin Mesick and Hunter Pemrick had the Brothers' goals while Joe Amodio and Will Detora scored for the Blue Streaks.
