Galesburg Girls Basketball: Streaks split MLK games

The Galesburg High School girls basketball team split a pair of games Saturday in the Chicago suburbs in its annual MLK Tournament.

The Silver Streaks secured a 59-56 win over Providence Catholic and fell to Minooka 66-43.

Galesburg (10-11) trailed Providence Catholic (10-12) until late in the contest and took a 51-50 lead — and wouldn’t let go of it — via a rebound putback by senior Yvonne Mixon with just under four minutes remaining.

The Celtics held a 11-4 advantage after the Streaks after the first eight minutes. Galesburg trailed 29-24 at intermission and 48-38 after three quarters. GHS outscored Providence 21-8 in the fourth stanza to gran the win.

Senior Emily Meinert and junior Chloe McCarthy had 13 points each to lead the Streaks.

Sophomore Lauren Knight had a game-high 16 points and junior Ryann Ogarek had 12 points for the Celtics.

Minooka held a 18-10 edge over Galesburg after the first quarter and led 29-23 at the half.

Mixon had six points and Sampson chipped in five against the Indians (12-6) in the first half.

Minooka was up 46-33 after three quarters. Midway through the fourth frame the Indians enjoyed a 54-37 advantage over the Streaks.

Mixon had 13 points against Minooka while Sampson finished with nine and Meinert chipped in six points.

Galesburg’s sophomores lost to Minooka 45-34 but defeated Providence 46-38.

Tiara Pendleton had 15 points and Riley Jenkins finished with 12 against the Celtics.

Pendleton netted 15 points versus the Indians.

The Streaks’ freshmen beat Providence 41-34 and defeated Minooka 43-32.

Lauren Livingston had 21 points for Galesburg versus the Indians and finished with 23 points against the Celtics.

Sophie Gugliotta chipped in 12 points in the win over Providence.
