New Delhi, Jan 14: University Grants Commission’s latest move of clipping the names of deemed universities this week has resulted in odd names for many educational institutions across the country. While Bengaluru based Christ University will be known as “Christ”, Ghaziabad’s Santosh University has been reduced to mere Santosh. The move also affected Pune’s Symbiosis International University which will be known as “Symbiosis International” now.
Supreme Court order on November 3 barred deemed universities to use “university” in their names. Ministry of Human Resources Development informed deemed universities about their new names on Friday. UGC had warned the universities to comply with apex court’s order to prevent them from any punitive action.
While many universities were found to be breaching the rules, at least 14 universities highlighted the fault of the government in awarding them names. The universities asked UGC to use “Deemed to be University” in their names. However, Commission denied them the permission, it asked them to opt for alternate names. Only four universities have suggested alternate names.
