WORCESTER - A Worcester man under indictment on manslaughter and unarmed robbery charges was held without bail at his arraignment Friday.
Samson A. Beauregard, 44, is charged in the death of 40-year-old Dai Ha, the victim of a robbery and assault that police said occurred May 15 on Mount Pleasant Street in the Main South section of the city. Mr. Ha died five days later as a result of his injuries.
Investigators said Mr. Ha was struck in the head from behind while walking along the street and was robbed after he was injured.
Mr. Beauregard was indicted Dec. 22 and arraigned Friday in Worcester Superior Court. Accompanied by his lawyer, John H. Cunha Jr., he entered not-guilty pleas to the charges against him.
Assistant District Attorney Sarah B. Richardson asked that bail be set on Mr. Beauregard at $200,000 cash without prejudice. At the time of his indictment, Mr. Beauregard was being held in the Essex County Jail and House of Correction on an unrelated probation matter, according to prosecutors.
Mr. Cunha told the court that his client would remain in custody in Essex County until August. He suggested that $200,000 cash bail was excessive in the case and asked the judge to hold Mr. Beauregard without bail, without prejudice, so he could address the issue of bail at Mr. Beauregard's next court appearance in February.
Judge Wrenn complied with the defense lawyer's request and continued Mr. Beauregard's case to Feb. 27.
A co-defendant, Sheila M. Pagan-Ariyo, 25, of 87 Norfolk St., was previously indicted on an unarmed robbery charge in the case.
