Iowa governor candidate Nate Boulton will launch TV ads starting Tuesday, making him the second candidate to take to the airwaves and marking an escalation in his bid for the Democratic nomination.
The 30-second ad will highlight Boulton’s efforts as a state senator last year opposing Republican legislation curtailing union bargaining rights and workers compensation claims for Iowa employees.
It’ll air on broadcast TV in the Des Moines and Cedar Rapids media markets as well as on cable channels and online beginning Tuesday and running at least through the Feb. 5 Iowa caucuses, campaign officials said.
They described the run as a “six-figure” ad buy that bolsters ongoing online advertising and grassroots organizing.
“Being able to pair our paid media operation with what we’re already doing with digital, earned media and our organizing effort puts together a comprehensive statewide campaign that I think is second to none,” Boulton campaign manager Joe O’Hern said.
Seven Democrats have declared candidacies for governor, and face a June 5 primary in which one must win 35 percent of the vote in order to clinch the nomination.
Another of those candidates, retired Des Moines businessman Fred Hubbell, has already begun running TV ads, airing a handful of ads continuously in the Des Moines and Cedar Rapids markets since October.
