NORWALK — A Westport couple are facing charges for attempting to steal $127-worth of items from a local Walmart, police said.

Norwalk Police responded to the Walmart at 688 Connecticut Avenue Friday evening on reports of a couple caught shoplifting.

Police said that 28-year-old Lucas Pender and Briana Pennell, 34, both of Westport, were seen taking items from the shelves and placing them in Walmart bags by store employees. The pair were later caught trying to leave the store with unpaid items, including four 12-packs of Red Bull, bed sheets, a comforter and a padlock.

A later search of Pender, who has a long history of drug-related arrests and convictions, revealed four folds of heroin on his person, as well as an unused syringe.

Pender was charged with sixth-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was held on a $25,000 bond, and was given a court date of Jan. 22.

Pennell was also charged with sixth-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny. She was given a summons to court for Jan. 22 and was later transported to the Westport Police Department on an outstanding warrant for additional larceny charges stemming from a November 2017 incident.
