LUDHIANA: Senior Supreme Court lawyer HS Phoolka, who has been fighting for justice and rights of 1984 riot victims, has termed the top court's decision to appoint new Special Investigation Team (SIT) as historic. He said that it is a very big and bold step taken first time by a senior court in 33 years. Phoolka was optimistic when he said that justice deluded for long will now be delivered.

With this, the noose around many Congress leaders including Kamal Nath will be tightened, Phoolka said.

Phoolka "derided" the statement made by Rana Gurjit Singh in which he said that Congress was not involved in the carnage. If no Congress leader was involved in it, then why did Rajiv Gandhi justify the killings by making a statement that when a big tree falls the earth shakes, Phoolka questioned adding that Rajiv Gandhi government organised the "mayhem" and rewarded Bhagat and Tytler by elevating Bhagat to cabinet minister and giving ministerial status to Tytler.

Giving details about the "modus operandi" followed by the mob, Phoolka said that inflammable powder was used in all parts of the city. From where this material and experts came in the city, he asked.

"All Congress leaders were leading the mob in their respective areas and Rajiv Gandhi government was fully involved in it. Wherever Sikhs gathered, police reached in large numbers to disarm them. All Sikh police officials were disarmed and even Sikh Light Infantry troops were also disarmed", said senior Supreme Court lawyer.

Phoolka termed it as a genocide and challenged Rana Gurjit Singh for open public debate on it. He expressed gratitude and thanked Chief Justice of India Deepak Mishra for appointing new SIT team.
