(Meredith/KCRA) -- It began with Matthew Nicholson, 28, losing a video game. He then raged alone in his room, yelling out in anger Thursday night in Ceres, California.

It ended with the death of his mother, Lydia, according to investigators.

She was shot in the head after an argument erupted when she came to his room to check on him. He blamed her for his broken headset.

During the argument, Nicholson grabbed a gun and started shooting, police told KCRA 3 News. Two bullets were found in the wall, one was lodged in the ceiling, and a fourth had struck his 68-year-old mother in the head, killing her.

The suspect’s father eventually wrestled the gun away from his son, who then drove to a relative’s house. Police spotted the car and arrested Nicholson without incident.

Lydia Nicholson's daughter, Autumn White, told KCRA 3 News her mother had a big heart and always invited people into her home. 

"My mom was a wonderful person who loved her children. This house has always been open to friends and family and it's always been a family atmosphere," White said.

KCRA 3 News reports Lydia was active in the community and volunteered in local schools. A neighbor told the TV station the family was friendly, and that this murder was surreal.

"What's this world coming to, a video game, 28-year-old kid with his video game. Speechless," said Ron Kutzman, a neighbor of the Nicholson family.

Nicholson is facing murder charges and is being held without bail. Investigators are still working to figure out what drove him to kill his own mother.
