Police say one of the men was found hiding under a car lift after he ran from the vehicle detectives stopped.
BROCKTON – Detectives stopped a vehicle driven by a man with a suspended license Friday afternoon and ended up seizing a loaded gun and over a pound of marijuana, police said.
Brockton police detectives and State Police Gang Unit troopers were conducting joint crime suppression patrols about 12:30 p.m. when they noticed a Kia Sorrento with New York license plates on East Ashland Street.
At one point, detectives identified the driver as Shane Sims, a man known to police as having gang affiliations, and learned his license was suspended, said Brockton police Detective Lt. Paul Bonanca.
The Kia eventually pulled into the driveway at 19 East Main St. and the detectives, who were in unmarked cruisers, activated their emergency lights.
“The Kia, operated by Sims, accelerated down the long driveway and was forced to stop at the end,” Bonnaca said. “Both front vehicle doors quickly swung open.”
Sims quickly exited the car and started running from the detectives, Bonanca said. The passenger, later identified by police as Manuel Ramos, was immediately taken into custody when he exited the vehicle, he said.
After a brief foot pursuit in the area of North Montello and East Battles streets, detectives located Sims “hiding under a car lift,” Bonanca said. The detectives found $1,560 in cash on the ground next to Sims, he said.
During a search of the Kia, detectives found a loaded Taurus 9mm semiautomatic handgun and 504 grams, of 1.1 pounds, of marijuana, Bonanca said.
Sims, 24, of 105 Belair St., Apt. 627, Brockton, was arrested and charged with illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession with intent to distribute a Class D substance, driving a motor vehicle with a suspended license and failing to stop for police. He also had a warrant.
Ramos, 21, of 97 Oak St., Brockton, was arrested and charged with illegal possession with intent to distribute a Class D substance.
Police say Sims, a former basketball star at Brockton High School, is well-known to detectives. He was arrested in July 2016 and charged with trafficking fentanyl following a raid that was the result of an investigation into a stolen PlayStation 4.
And Ramos’ home was also the location of a police raid in July 2016 when more than 50 local and state law enforcement officials executed search warrants simultaneously at four houses. At that time, he was charged with conspiracy to violate the drug laws and his bail was revoked on another open case.
The men are expected to be arraigned on the new charges Tuesday in Brockton District Court.
