Truck driver involved in fatal Osceola crash

WINTER HAVEN — A Winter Haven truck driver was involved in a fatal crash early Saturday in Osceola County. Michael Vanpelt, 29, of Zephyrhills, was killed in a head-on collision with a semi-tractor-trailer driven by Anthony Alexander, 31, of Winter Haven, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

Vanpelt was driving his 2016 Dodge car westbound in the eastbound lanes of State Road 60 near Peavine Road shortly before 4 a.m. The Dodge struck Alexander’s semi, which was traveling eastbound on State Road 60. A passenger in Vanpelt’s car – Ronald Higgins, 43, of Dade City – was taken to Osceola Regional Hospital with critical injuries.

Investigators could not determine why the Dodge was in the wrong lanes, and the accident is under investigation.
