Winter storm and Arctic blast roar across East
The brief January thaw is over. A potent winter storm will bring rain, ice and snow to portions of the southern and eastern United States, which will be followed by another ferocious blast of bitterly cold Arctic air. A strong cold front is expected to sweep east and eventually clear the entire East Coast by Saturday afternoon, the National Weather Service said. The cold weather will stick around through much of next week, according to Weather.com. This will include the chance for another winter storm in the Northeast on Tuesday.

Must-see cars, trucks and SUVs coming to Detroit's Auto Show
As auto shows go, none is more important than the annual gathering in Detroit. The city famous as home to the American auto industry is where the world looks first for trends in auto design and innovation — and this year's gathering will be no exception. While the industry is awash in SUVs, the show is shaping up as fairly balanced between crossovers, cars and pickups. Many automakers have announced what models they will unveil in Detroit, but most have yet to reveal them. Listen for big announcements this weekend and next week during press events.

NFL divisional round matchups to watch
With less than a month to the Super Bowl, the divisional round of the NFL playoffs takes place this weekend. Saturday, the Falcons visit the Eagles and the Patriots host the Titans. The Eagles believe in quarterback Nick Foles, who had to replace the injured Carson Wentz. Sunday, the Steelers look to topple the Jaguars, while the Vikings aim to slow down the Saints. Whether running back Le'Veon Bell can carry the Steelers to a victory against the Jaguars is one of the four key matchups to watch for this weekend. Our experts are almost in full agreement — except for one game — in their predictions.

Funeral this weekend for abused 4-year-old
Services for Gabrielle Barrett, a 4-year-old Detroit-area girl, are schedule for this weekend after she died last week from severe burns. The Washtenaw County (Mich.) medical examiner called it the "worst child death case” in 27 years of practice. The girl’s mother, Candice Diaz, and the mother’s boyfriend, Brad Fields, have been charged with felony murder, second-degree murder, first-degree child abuse and torture. Court documents gave gruesome details of alleged physical abuse to Gabrielle, including the girl being burned so badly that her big toe fell off, and said police found melted skin in the bathtub drain.
Floridians, get ready: Brightline is open for business!
After nearly six years of anticipation, Floridians will be able to board Brightline's fleet of colorful passenger trains Saturday and travel at speeds up to 79 mph between West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale. The $3.1 billion railroad — the country's only privately owned and operated passenger railroad — has marketed the railroad to Millennials and business travelers as a faster and more convenient alternative to Florida's often-crowded highways. Brightline's diesel-electric powered trains feature a variety of amenities, including leather seats, wide aisles, and free wireless Internet. The project's successful launch — and performance in the coming years — could have implications for passenger rail nationwide, one company official told USA TODAY.
