Key accused hospitalised

The Ernakulam special court that handles POCSO cases has postponed to Monday (January 15), the sentencing of the three accused in a case of the murder of a four-year-old girl.

The case was postponed just as Renjith, key accused in the case, tried to end his life by consuming a poisonous fruit and was admitted to the Medical College Hospital at Kottayam.

The court had last week found all the three accused, including the mother of the child, guilty and was to award the sentence on Wednesday, which got deferred to Friday.

An Ernakulam sub jail official said that Renjith looked uneasy on Wednesday night and later revealed he had consumed the poisonous fruit fearing severe punishment.

He was taken to the Ernakulam General Hospital and was eventually shifted to Medical College Hospital, Kottayam.

The toddler was killed by the accused as she was seen as a nuisance in his alleged illicit relationship with her mother.

Basil, a friend of his, was an accomplice.
