Ban not enough

| | Vrindavan

Sir — This refers to the report, “Up govt issues directives on use of loudspeakers at religious, public places” (January 8). The Uttar Pradesh Government’s ban of unauthorised use of loudspeakers and public address systems at religious and public places has given a great deal of relief to the people who suffer mutely from blaring broadcasts, dawn to dusk. However, it is disappointing that there was no mention about the rampant use of cone speakers, in defiance of the Supreme Court’s order of 2005, wherein the Court banned the use of cone speakers. Unless district heads are instructed to remove cone speakers from atop all religious premises, this move of the Government will not yield any desired result. The Government should strike at the root of this menace by making permanent installation and even hiring of cone speakers unlawful and punishable with heavy fine.
