The Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad on Friday arrested seven alleged Maoists from Mumbai and Thane who are suspected of trying to recruit people for the Maoist cause.
According to ATS officers, they received a tip-off on Friday that a Naxal would be entering Mumbai via Thane. They laid a trap at Kalyan railway station and intercepted a suspect on Friday morning.
“We questioned the suspect, a Telengana native, about the purpose of his visit to Maharashtra and found his responses evasive. He was taken into custody and questioned intensively. Based on the results, we conducted raids in Kamraj Nagar and Mata Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar and picked up six more suspects. A search of their rented houses revealed literature connected to the CPI (M), and all seven were arrested,” an ATS officer said.
The officer said a few of the accused have been in touch with active Naxal cadres in the Golden Corridor, a name given to certain areas in Maharashtra and Gujarat by Maoists for propagation of their ideology. The accused have been remanded in police custody till January 16.
