Devin Booker had nine turnovers in Friday’s loss to Houston and has 35 turnovers in his last six games, but interim coach Jay Triano said there are no plans to relieve Booker of some of his point-guard responsibilities.
Triano said the coaching staff looked at Booker’s turnovers Saturday morning and discovered most of them are occurring when Booker plays his natural position of shooting guard.
“It’s not even a passing thing or trying to make tough passes,” Triano said. “He lost the ball a couple of times. A couple have been offensive fouls, too, when he’s pushing off trying to get open or he gets a charging call.”
Triano also said it’s natural for a player who has the ball in his hands as much as Booker to have a high turnover rate. Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook (4.5), Houston’s James Harden (4.4) and Cleveland’s LeBron James (4.2) rank second, third and fourth, respectively in turnovers per game. (New Orleans center DeMarcus Cousins is first with five turnovers per contest).
Booker ranks eighth at 3.6 turnovers per game, up from 3.1 last season.
“Those guys who have the ball, there’s a better percentage they’re going to turn it over,” Triano said.

Suns insider Scott Bordow updates the Suns' health status ahead of Sunday's game and reports that Tyson Chandler, 35, is looking to play two more years.
Chandler nears 10,000 boards
Tyson Chandler needs just 11 rebounds to become the 40th player in NBA history to grab 10,000 rebounds for his career.
But Chandler isn’t stopping there. He told azcentral sports Saturday that he plans to play at least another two seasons, which would take him into his 19th year in the NBA. Chandler, 35, has one year left on his contract with the Suns.
“My goal is to go either 19 or 20 seasons,” Chandler said.
Chandler said passing the 10,000 mark in rebounds is “a big feat.”
“I think anytime you hit one of those clubs, it’s definitely a great honor,” Chandler added. “Shows the type of work you put in, being dedicated to your craft. I’m going to look forward to these things when I’m done, but I’m going to try to get to 11,000 and higher and climb up the all-time list.”
Offensive execution
After watching film of Friday’s loss Triano said he thought the game turned after he subbed out for Booker with 4:48 in the first quarter and the Suns up 21-13.
Phoenix failed to score on its next seven possessions – two turnovers, five missed shots – and by the time Booker returned, the game was tied at 21.
“That was the biggest thing to me,” Triano said. “We just let them get confidence and get back in the game. It happened when we went to the bench. Our poor execution led to transition and easy shots going the other way.”
Injury update
Power forward Marquese Chriss (hip) did not practice Saturday and is not expected to play Sunday against the Pacers, Triano said. Forward Josh Jackson (groin) and point guard Isaiah Canaan (hip) both practiced, and Triano said he’s hopeful they’ll be able to go.
Jackson said his injured groin, which bothered him so much Tuesday that his leg “felt dead,” didn’t give him problems during Saturday’s workout. But Phoenix wants to make sure Jackson is 100 percent before he returns.
“(Team trainers) tell me with groin injuries you want to wait until you’re fully recovered until you come back because it can be something that’s nagging all year,” Jackson said. “But it felt good today.”
Peters principle
Vice President of Basketball Operations James Jones jokingly told rookie Alec Peters that he recorded a hat trick in Friday’s loss – a dunk, a 3-point shot and a charge.
Peters had five points and three assists in 14 minutes in just his third game with the Suns.
“It’s a lot faster than the G-League games, I can assure you that,” said Peters, who has been playing with the Northern Arizona Suns.
Peters had to travel from Toronto – where the G-League Showcase was being held – to Phoenix to be in uniform for Friday’s game.
“It’s tough, but you live for something like this,” Peters said. “I had a big travel day, traveled all morning to get here, but it’s all worth it to be a part of this team.”
James signs
Point guard Mike James, released by Phoenix late last month, has signed a two-way contract with the New Orleans Pelicans. James averaged 10.4 points, 3.8 assists and 2.8 rebounds in 32 games with the Suns.
