Cal women top Washington

Kristine Anigwe totaled 26 points and 10 rebounds and Penina Davidson added 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting with nine boards to help the No. 24 Cal women hold off Washington 69-60 on Friday night in Berkeley.

Anigwe and Davidson combined to make 20 of 28 shots from the floor (71.4 percent), but the rest of the Bears shot just 23.5 percent (8-for-34). Asha Thomas added 14 points and eight assists and Mikayla Cowling scored two points on 1-of-7 shooting but added 11 assists, six rebounds and three steals.

Cowling’s jumper gave Cal (12-4, 3-2 Pac-12) a 50-48 lead heading into the final period.

“Mikayla is such an incredible player,” Cal head coach Lindsay Gottlieb said. “You can put her in different spots and trust her to make the play. I put in an offense in the last day or two and changed around some positions and put her in the middle of the floor, and she made the right decisions.”

Amber Melgoza led the Huskies (6-10, 0-5) with 15 points and six assists, but she made just 5 of 18 shots from the floor as Washington connected on 21 of 61 attempts (34 percent). The Huskies are still looking for their first Pac-12 win under new coach Jody Wynn.

The Huskies took a 32-31 lead in the third on a Hannah Johnson three-pointer. Jenna Moser’s three stretched Washington’s lead to 37-33, but Davidson scored five in an 11-0 run to give Cal a 44-37 lead. Davidson scored four straight to open the fourth and Washington got no closer than four from there.
