A Landrum man accused in a Friday afternoon fatal shooting on California Avenue in Spartanburg was arrested in Polk County, N.C.

Deputies from the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office responded at 1:45 p.m. to a reported shooting at 668 California Ave. When they arrived, they found a male victim who had suffered several gunshot wounds, according to a statement from Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. Kevin Bobo.

The victim, who was identified as 38-year-old Terry Steven Whiteside Jr., was taken to Spartanburg Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. Bobo said in an email that a witness provided deputies with an account of what happened, including the suspect's name and a description of his vehicle.

The suspect — who investigators identified as Patrick James Coggins, 23, of 217 Clarice Circle — was taken into custody by the Polk County Sheriff's Office in North Carolina after they said they spotted his vehicle in a grocery store parking lot.

Coggins is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, according to Bobo.

Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said that a shotgun used in the incident had been recovered.

Bobo said investigators would interview Coggins in Polk County.

The investigation is ongoing and investigators aren't yet sure of a motive.
