BIGGSVILLE — It took a while for the Macomb High School boys basketball team to grease the wheels against West Central, but when the Bombers finally got on a roll they were able to stay in high gear and the result was a 55-20 win Friday night.
West Central came out in a stall offense and limited Macomb’s scoring opportunities with the Bombers holding just a 6-5 lead through a quarter. The pace got quicker in the second but Macomb didn’t stretch things out until the third.
The Bombers forced the Heat into eight third quarter turnovers and won the period 17-6 to take a 19 point lead into the fourth.
“Defensively I thought our intensity was solid from the tip,” Macomb coach Jeremy Anderson said. “Offensively. We were trying to thread the needle between three sets of arms. In the second half we talked about not trying to make a great play and just make a good play. We started to rotate the ball and things started to open up.”
Carter Fayhee repeatedly found space against West Central’s zone and led the Bombers with 15 points.
“Carter is such a good passer and he sees the floor so well that, especially against zone. He’s deadly when he can get the ball inside while playing on the wing,” Anderson said.
Fayhee said the second half was a reflection of what the Bombers are expecting throughout the rest of the season.
“In the second half we came out and moved the ball more and got more fast breaks,” he said. “I think our defense was really good tonight and the more we do that it will be a lot easier for us.”
Xavier Campbell had 11 points off the bench for Macomb, who has won three in a row and now sits at 10-7 for the season.
Brandon Annegers led West Central (5-11) with eight points.
“We’ve talked about keeping our expectations high. This was a (West Central) club that had won four in a row and had beaten Illini West,” Anderson said. “As well as we played tonight it would be great to keep it rolling and play on Tuesday. Unfortunately we don’t play until next Friday. We’ve got to get in the gym and work on things ahead of Illini West.”
