Prep Roundup: GHS puts 16 weightlifters into regional finals

LAKE CITY — Gainesville won its district in girls weightlifting with a score of 71 while Columbia came in second with 42 and Ocala Vanguard finished third with 32 points. 

GHS advances 16 weightlifters to the regional finals next week at Atlantic Coast High School in Jacksonville after winning its District 3 match to advance to Region 2.

101-pound class: Shanika Williams and Arizona Parker; 110: Hannah Paul and Yaree James; 119: Jocelynn White; 129: Sarah Seavers; 139: Deborah Lee and Quenteria Dixson; 154: Kyleigh Beecham; 169: Danee’ Jackson and Melissa LeGrande; 183: Brianna Boggs and Kyesha Williams 199: DeQualia Kelly; Unl: Tiffany Hunter and Haylee Hunter.

Buchholz had three qualifiers: 183-pound class: Lily Orton; 199: Kaitlyn Lower; Unl: Emmeline Oliver.

“All in all, great meet at Columbia, feeling pretty good about next week at regionals and hope some of these girls will qualify for state,” Gainesville weightlifting coach Steve Bauer said.

Branford 62, Chiefland 31: At Chiefland, junior guard Tori Suggs led Branford with 18 points and three assists in a win over Chiefland.

Freshman guard Cera McElreath added 15 points, seven assists and five steals while junior guard Rene Root contributed five points, six assists and five steals for the Bucs (14-3, 8-1).

Trenton 59, Bell 23: At Bell, junior guard Bryn Thomas had 11 points and five steals to lead Trenton over district foe Bell.

Senior forward Thalia Jackson added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Tigers (13-2, 8-0).
