Andhra Pradesh has emerged as No.1 in allotment of seats under the India BPO Promotion Scheme (IBPS) launched by the Software Technology Parks of India (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology).
The scheme, part of the Digital India programme, aims to create employment in tier 2 and tier three cities and towns. While AP got the highest number of seats allotted among all States, Visakhapatnam remained the topmost city in getting a large number of seats. Of the 17,850, Visakhapatnam received sanction for 4,000 seats.
Under the scheme, incentives worth ₹493 crore will be sanctioned by allotting 48,300 seats with a projected employment of 1.50 lakh in three years.
“The State in general and Visakhapatnam in particular have got record number of allotment and response from entrepreneurs to create jobs in Sunrise Andhra Pradesh,” STPI Joint Director M.P. Dubey told The Hindu. He said compared to other States, A.P had received more than the sanctioned strength of seats due to response to investment in BPO sector.
Visakhapatnam has provided jobs to 70% of those employed in IT and IT enabled services through various BPOs. The city is home to big BPOs including HSBC, WNS, Concentrix, Patra India and IBM. Under the scheme, the Centre will promote capacity building in small cities and towns by creating infrastructure.
The offers 50% of expenditure reimbursement at the rate of ₹ 1 lakh per seat for capital expenditure and operational expenditure as well as administrative items.
Special incentive will be given to every job created for women and specially enabled persons.
“The reason for good response in Visakhapatnam is availability of qualified graduates and migration of many experienced candidates from neighbouring States,” Mr. Dubey said.
