Starkville Academy sweeps district games at Canton Academy

The Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers were locked in a tough District 2-AAA battle with Canton Academy for a half on Friday night.

The third quarter was very good for the Lady Vols.

Starkville Academy outscored Canton 17-6 in the third quarter and that proved to be the difference in the game. The Lady Vols won a 41-34 decision.

It was the fifth consecutive win for Starkville Academy as it improved to 14-10 overall and 3-1 in the district.

Canton Academy had an edge in shooting by hitting 36 percent from the field to 34 percent for the Lady Vols. The home team also out-rebounded SA 27-24.

The Lady Vols were able to force 14 turnovers and got six points off those turnovers.

Lillee Alpe hit five of 10 shots from the field, including four 3-point field goals, to lead Starkville Academy in scoring with 14 points. Milla Davis contributed 11 points and OCH Regional Medical Center Athlete of the Week Mary Peyton Passons added 10 points.

The Volunteers jumped out to a 15-8 lead after the first quarter and held on for the district victory.

Like the girls, it was the fifth-straight win for the SA boys and they improved to 13-4 overall and 3-1 in the district.

Raegan Richardson had a double-double of 21 points and 15 rebounds for the Vols. Noah Methvin scored 14 points and Brady Richardson added 10 points.
