Police investigating shooting in North Brookfield

NORTH BROOKFIELD - Police this week have been investigating a shooting last week on Bigelow Street that sent a man to the hospital.

Police posted a press release to the department's Facebook page late Friday night noting that it received a phone call Monday from Harrington Memorial Hospital reporting it had just transferred a 35-year-old man to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester for further treatment of a gunshot would to the side of his abdomen.

Police said the shooting happened around 10 p.m., Jan. 5. They said the victim was later treated and released from UMass.

According to police, the Bigelow Street resident was outside shoveling his driveway the night of Jan. 5. He turned around and briefly saw a person holding a rifle. Police said that as he turned with the shovel, the rifle discharged. Police said the suspect was wearing several layers of clothing, a dark jacket, and a full-face knit hat. He ran from the scene in an unknown direction.

Police said there was no one available Friday night to comment.
