Fred Muffitt

DIGHTON — Fred E. Muffitt, 78, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018, at his home in Lane County.

He was born Nov. 29, 1939, in Garden City to Clyde Earl and Bessie Mae (Schaben) Muffitt.

He married Peggy A. Garton on March 4, 1959, in Dighton.

He grew up in Finney County and attended Garden City schools. He served in the Army National Guard for 10 years. After moving to Lane County, he was a farmer-stockman and heavy equipment operator. He also worked for the Lane County Road Department for 31 years. He enjoyed hunting, especially guiding pheasant hunting trips, restoring old tractors, his dogs and bowling. He was an annual participant in the Utica Days Parade with his restored tractors and taught hunting safety courses for many years. He also was a member and past chief of the Shields Fire Department and was a member of the Dighton Fire Department. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Dighton, I.O.O.F. Lodge of Dighton and the Rebekah Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Muffitt, of the Home; a son, Fred Lee Muffitt of Phillips, Wis.; a daughter, Mattie and Kevin Duckworth of Liberal; thee grandchildren; and thee great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two daughters, Linda Schaben and Lolene Emerson.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Christian Church. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery, with military honors by the Kansas Army National Guard Honor Guard.

Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Boomhower Funeral Home.
