Harwood Funeral Home now offers a new payment option that will assist qualifying families when making funeral arrangements for loved ones at the time of death.

Lloyd Harwood, the funeral director and owner of Harwood Funeral Home, said at-need funeral financing gives people the option to make payment arrangements if they don't have a pre-arranged, or prepaid, funeral.

Funeral homes don't offer payment plans, he said, but through this program, families can go through this separate finance company that solely handles funerals. Payments are made to the finance company, which include interest. Harwood said credit scores are not affected by filling out an application.

"If a family has a death, this would be an option if they don't have the money right away," he said. "This would be an option for them to take care of the funeral arrangements at that time and not be so stressed about how to pay for it."

Harwood said at-need funeral financing is a newer concept, and not many funeral homes offer it.

Harwood recommends prepaying for funerals, but he realizes that can't always be done.

"There are a lot of folks who a death comes as a complete surprise and they are hard pressed to be able to know how they are going to be able to pay for the funeral," he said. "This is just another option."
