Hockey: Ex-Bulldogs headed to Olympics

Pernilla Winberg (2008-13) and Maria Lindh were named to Sweden's Olympic women's hockey roster that was announced Saturday. Lindh would have been a senior this season at UMD, but graduated last spring and is now playing professional hockey in Sweden, like Winberg.

Mason Raymond (2005-07) was named to the Canadian men's Olympic team this week. The 32-year-old is playing professionally in Switzerland after playing 609 NHL games over 10 seasons with the Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames and Anaheim Ducks.

A total of 11 former UMD players and coaches are set to take part in next month's Olympic hockey tournament representing five different countries, with Raymond being the lone representative for the UMD men.

• UMD women's coach Maura Crowell will return from Russia next week with a medal. The question now is what color? The U.S. Under-18 Women's National Team defeated Canada 4-3 in a shootout to advance to the gold-medal game of the IIHF U-18 Women's World Championship. Team USA, of which Crowell is the associate head coach, will play Sweden at 10:30 a.m. today. Included on the team are future Bulldogs Maggie Flaherty of Lakeville, Minn., and Lizi Norton of Orono, Minn.
