Sanders, Ryan beat Rider for 1st in 5-5A

DENTON - Ryan quarterback Spencer Sanders, the 5A Offensive Player of the Year in football, is good in basketball, too. Sanders had 20 points Friday night as Ryan defeated Rider, 52-41.

Ty Caswell led Rider (19-4, 3-1) with 13 points and Ben Moffat added 10. Rider didn't outscore Ryan in any of the four quarters but stayed within striking distance.

Ryan took over sole possession of first place in District 5-5A at 4-0 and is 15-3 overall.

Bulldogs blow out Vernon in opener

VERNON - Burkburnett scored nearly half of its points from 3-point range Friday night in the District 6-4A opener. That's saying something when you notch a 91-56 victory.

The Bulldogs scored 45 from 3-point range as seven players dialed long distance. KenDarious Horton hit four 3s and Duante Thompson had three; Jalen White, Andrew Hawkins and Jaevion Moreland had two apiece; and Gavin Morris and Jacob Williams both hit once.

White's 16 points led all scorers and Horton had 15. Burkburnett made 19 two-point shots and eight free throws.

Brayden Williams scored 12 to lead Vernon.

WCS pulls away from Warriors

The Wichita Christian Stars broke open a tight game in the second half, taking sole possession of first place in TAPPS 1-A with a 52-40 victory against Christ Academy.

The game was tied, 24-24, at halftime, but WCS pulled away with a 13-6 advantage in the third quarter.

Evan Findley led all scorers with 22 points, while Nic Crittenden added 11 for the Stars. Logan Cypher led the Warriors with 11.
