Kayaker missing off Warwick's Conimicut Point

As night fell on Friday, a contingent of searchers tried to find a missing 46-year-old Warwick man after his wife told police that he had not returned from kayaking at Conimicut Point, authorities said.

The man had launched his kayak at the point around noon, and his wife notified police that he was missing around 4:30 p.m., saying her husband normally kayaks for about an hour, said Warwick police Lt. Michael Lima.

The man’s vehicle was located in the parking lot at Conimicut, where Warwick police, the U.S. Coast Guard and firefighters from Warwick, Providence, Cranston and Warwick, established a command post for search operations.

The search was severely hampered by heavy fog, Lima said. The man was paddling with an orange kayak, said Lima, who did not know details about whether the kayaker was wearing a wetsuit or life jacket.
