The Raiders confirmed Friday what head coach Jon Gruden announced Tuesday — the names of his coordinators for next season.
Greg Olson will be the offensive coordinator, Paul Guenther the defensive coordinator and Rich Bisaccia will have the title of assistant head coach/special teams coordinator.
Olson held the same title with Oakland from 2013-14, which included quarterback Derek Carr’s rookie season. Olson was the Jaguars’ offensive coordinator from 2015-16 and quarterbacks coach of the Rams this past season.
Gruden will call the plays for the offense next season. But he said Olson’s experience with Carr should be valuable.
“His intel there will be very important,” Gruden said. “He coached with me in Tampa and he coached with (Rams head coach) Sean McVay, one of my ex-assistants, in L.A. So the system of football that we run will be a real natural flow.”
Guenther spent the past 13 seasons with the Bengals, including the past four as their defensive coordinator. Under Guenther, Cincinnati’s defense ranked second in points allowed per game (17.4) in 2015 and eighth (19.7) in 2016. The Bengals also totaled 69 interceptions over the past four seasons and held opposing quarterbacks to an 80.1 passer rating.
Guenther previously coached with Gruden’s brother, Jay, who was the offensive coordinator in Cincinnati from 2011-13.
“I loved the way the Bengals played defense,” Jon Gruden said Tuesday. “Up the field, single gap, get after you … (Guenther is) a great teacher. He can coach a lot of different situations to a high level.”
Bisaccia was Gruden’s special teams coach during all seven of his seasons in Tampa Bay, from 2002-08. He spent the past five seasons coaching the special teams units in Dallas.
The Raiders have not announced the rest of Gruden’s coaching staff, for which he has been interviewing candidates.
