Ferry services on the two major routes in Shimulia-Kathalbari and Paturia-Daulatdia in the Padma river remained suspended since early today due to dense fog.
In Shimulia-Kathalbari
The ferries came to a complete halt from 2:30am to avoid any untoward incident, our Munshiganj correspondent reports this morning quoting Shah Newaz Khalid, assistant general manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTA).
Seven ferries were stranded with thousands of passengers in the middle of the river amid sever cold weather, Khalid told our Munshiganj correspondent.
In Paturia-Daulatdia route
Meanwhilie, UNB adds: the authorities of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) suspended the ferry services and plying of the water vessels on the Paturia-Daulatdia route from 2:30am due to blurred visibility caused by thick fog, said Nasir Uddin Mohammad Chowdhury, assistant general manager of BIWTC at Aricha.
Five ferries remained stuck in the middle of the river while seven others lay anchored at Paturia in Manikganj and four at Daulatdia ghats in Rajbari with a good number of vehicles and passengers on board.
The ferry services on the busy route will resume once the visibility returns, he added.
