Pimpri Chinchwad: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has invited bids for laying of optical fibre cables in the twin cities, which will connect all civic offices, citizen facilitation centres, markets, religious places and bus stops under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.
The move follows directions from the board of directors of the Pimpri Chinchwad Smart City Limited. As per the plan, the twin cities will also have Wi-Fi, CCTV cameras at all junctions, traffic detectors, smart city kiosk projects and variable message displays. "The variable message displays will provide real-time information on traffic status and emergency-related services," civic officials said.
The 750km optical fibre cable (OFC) network will serve as a digital backbone for all connectivity requirements and information. The connectivity technology is being planned for the next 20 years, the officials said.
Pimpri Chinchwad had been selected for the digital backbone network after Nagpur city. The construction agency will have to undertake a detailed survey of various locations planned to be covered under the OFC network, the officials added.
About the smart city kiosk project, it is a cellphone-based digital platform for citizens and tourists to interact with the civic administration and citizens' groups. The kiosk will act as a digital interaction point for services like city card recharge and mobile ticketing.
The Wi-Fi service will create a digitally connected ecosystem and increase access to digital inclusion for all citizens and tourists.
