PALO ALTO — A man killed in a car crash just outside of Palo Alto earlier this week has been identified by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office as Dr. Juergen Willmann, 45, of Stanford.

Willmann was a radiologist at Stanford Health Care and a professor of radiology at the Stanford University School of Medicine.
“We are all deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic loss of our friend and esteemed colleague, Juergen Willmann, M.D.,” said Sanjiv Sam Gambhir, chairman of the Stanford University School of Medicine Department of Radiology, in a statement Thursday.
“This is a devastating tragedy for which no words will suffice,” he continued. “Our love and prayers are with his wife, Amelie Lutz, M.D. and family during this most difficult time.”
The crash was reported about noon Monday on Page Mill Road, between Deer Creek and Coyote Hill roads. Willmann was driving a Fiat 500 east when he veered off the road and hit a tree, according to the California Highway Patrol. No one else was in the car.
CHP Officer Art Montiel said Willmann was not wearing a seatbelt and died of his injuries at the scene.
The collision remains under investigation. Anyone with information can contact the CHP Redwood City area office at 650-369-6261.
