JEFFERSON, South Dakota | Firefighters ruled a residence near Jefferson a complete loss following a fire that began Friday morning. 

Crews responded to the fire on 482nd Avenue in rural Jefferson around 10:45 a.m. Friday. 

Jefferson Fire Department Assistant Chief John Trudeau said the fire started on the house's second floor and was called in by a passerby. No one was home at the time of the fire, and there were no injuries, he said.

Jefferson firefighters received assistance from Elk Point and North Sioux City, Trudeau said. Crews were on scene until approximately 3 p.m.

Trudeau said the cause is unknown at this time.
