South Knoxville and the South Knoxville Waterfront is again open to traffic as the city reopened Gay Street Bridge late this week after it was closed for over two months.
The work, done on one of two bridges connecting downtown with South Knoxville, was originally supposed to have been done by the end of 2017, but the contractor got a permit extension due to poor weather conditions, according to Eric Vreeland, spokesman for the City of Knoxville.

Charles Blalock and Sons had been installing a water line between East Blount Avenue and Council Place as part of the Blount Avenue Streetscape Improvement Project.
The road had to be closed due to a “major trench just past the southern end of the bridge, on Blount Avenue,” Vreeland said.
