MANHATTAN – Great Bend’s Cole Pierce (200 free) and Isaac Panzer (50 free) won individual events to spark the Panthers’ third-place finish at the Manhattan Invitational swimming meet.
Pierce won the 200 free (2:01.56) followed by teammate Matthew Huslig (2:04.05) and Panzer the 50 free (23.57). Cal Kaiser placed runner-up in the 100 butterfly (1:00.31).
“Isaac Panzer continued to swim solid for us every time,” said Great Bend coach Steve Beaumont. “He put together a great 100 fly (improving nearly two seconds) and won the 50 free. Pierce and Huslig going 1-2 in the 200 free was obviously a good event for us as well.”
Manhattan (432) placed first followed by Olathe South (338) and Great Bend (275).
“This was easily our toughest competition of the season, but we held our own against some really good 6A teams,” Beaumont said. “Throw out the diving points for Olathe South (about 36 points) and we weren't that far out of second place.”
Beaumont was pleased with the swimmers’ improvement.
“Our motto all season has been Get Better Today, and we continue to do that each time we compete,” he said. “I’m really impressed with the improvements this team has made – not just in their times but in their overall approach to racing. So many of our younger swimmers are doing great things – Jacob Kennedy has put together some really good races the last two meets, as has Allen To, Eduardo Prado, and Daniel Abbott.”
