A 30-year-old man drove off Loop 1604 on the Northwest Side early Friday, and while he was examining his car, a motorcyclist ran him over and killed him, police said.

The driver, Hector Luis Salinas Jr., was traveling westbound in the access lanes of the 6200 block of North Loop 1604 West around 1:20 a.m. when he struck a guardrail.

Paramedics arrived to the scene and pronounced Salinas dead. The motorcyclist was taken to University Hospital in critical condition.

Police said the initial incident occurred around 1:25 a.m. on Loop 1604 near La Cantera Parkway. For reasons unknown, the driver lost control of his sedan and crashed on the side of the road.

He got out of his car to check on the damage, and was standing in the roadway, when the motorcyclist struck him while traveling at a high rate of speed, police said.
