Trump UK visit LATEST: Twitter reacts after US President cancels visit to London

DOWNING Street has insisted Donald Trump is welcome in London after the US President cancelled his trip to the UK - but politicians remain divided on the saga and Twitter users have quickly taken to social media to mock the President's decision.

The working visit to open the new US embassy was expected to be made by the US President after plans for a full state visit were postponed.

However, Mr Trump has decided not to attend the event, sending Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in his place, in a major diplomatic snub to the UK.

Critics of the president rejoiced at the news, but a Number 10 spokesman has insisted the US President is "welcome" in London and added the special relationship between the countries "will endure".

The visit is said to have been cancelled due to fears of protests

The president said he was refusing to attend in protest at the Obama administration's decision to move the embassy.

On Twitter, he said: "Reason I cancelled my trip to London is that I am not a big fan of the Obama Administration having sold perhaps the best located and finest embassy in London for “peanuts,” only to build a new one in an off location for 1.2 billion dollars.

“Bad deal. Wanted me to cut the ribbon - NO!”

However, many speculated the backlash his visit has sparked is the real reason he pulled out.

Since news of the cancellation broke, the hashtag 'ICancelledMyTripToLondon' has been trending on Twitter as social media users parodied the President with their own weird and wonderful alternative suggestions for avoiding a trip to the Big Smoke.

One tweeted: "#ICancelledMyTripToLondon because beer is so expensive. SAD!"

Another added: "#ICancelledMyTripToLondon because I found out Big Ben is a clock & not a guardsman. False advertising - bad!"

One suggested a dislike for the Tower of London may be behind the President's decision to cancel.

The user wrote: "#ICancelledMyTripToLondon because their Tower is old. Very very old. And previous guests there have died. In horrible ways. Very horrible. Bigly nasty.

"Towers should be new and shiny like mine. No tower bigger or shinier."

A number of MPs had pledged to “empty chair” Mr Trump if he addressed the Houses of Parliament during a visit.

They blamed the US President's views on women, torture and refugees for their plans to boycott the event.

Another factor on Mr Trump deciding to skip the embassy opening, was believed to be the declining personal relationship between himself and Mrs May.

After the Prime Minister criticised Mr Trump for sharing far-Right videos without verifying the claims contained in the footage, he hit back attacking her directly on Twitter.

The president tweeted: “Theresa May, don’t focus on me, focus on the destructive Radical Islamic Terrorism that is taking place within the United Kingdom. We are doing just fine.”

Downing Street also vocally expressed their opposition to the US’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Mrs May said: "We disagree with the US decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem and recognise Jerusalem as the Israeli capital before a final status agreement.

"We believe it is unhelpful in terms of prospects for peace in the region. The British Embassy to Israel is based in Tel Aviv and we have no plans to move it.”

The visit next month was not due to be given the full protocol of a state visit, which was expected to take place at a later date.

That led to Foreign Minister Boris Johnson accusing Mr Khan of jeopardising Britain's relationship with America.
