Generation Company with Highest Installed Capacity in Private Sector - Reliance Power

Power 20:20  /  December

A part of the Reliance Group, Reliance Power was established in 2007 to develop, construct and operate power projects both in India as well as internationally. The company on its own and through its subsidiaries has around 6,000 MW of operational power generation assets. The projects under development include three coal-fired projects to be fuelled by reserves from captive mines and supplies from India and elsewhere; one gas-fired project; and twelve hydroelectric projects, six of them in Arunachal Pradesh, five in Himachal Pradesh and one in Uttarakhand.

Reliance Power's project portfolio also includes 3,960 MW Sasan Ultra Mega Power Project (Madhya Pradesh). The company has also registered projects with the Clean Development Mechanism executive board for issuance of Certified Emission Reduction (CER) certificates.

Key success factors
The company's project portfolio requires substantial use of natural resources such as land, water and minerals. Its plants are designed in a manner that optimises the utilisation of land, thereby bringing down the aggregate land requirement and minimising the potential for displacement of local communities. It also adopts cleaner technologies related to power generation that reduce the consumption of fuel and water required for plant operations, thereby conserving precious natural resources and contributing to a greener and healthier environment. Sasan UMPP has the distinction of being one of the most efficient super critical thermal plants in the country in terms of fuel and water consumption.

Performance Highlights
Reliance Power's projects have demonstrated another year of consistent operational performance. The company's flagship project, the 3,960 MW Sasan Ultra Mega Power Project (Sasan UMPP), continues to deliver 'Best in Class' operating performance in both coal and power sectors. Similarly, its other generating plants viz. 1,200 MW coal-based Rosa Power Plant in Uttar Pradesh, 600-MW Butibori Power Plant in Maharashtra, 40-MW solar PV plant in Rajasthan and 45-MW wind power project in Maharashtra, also delivered strong operating performance.

The 100 MW solar thermal plant adjacent to the Solar PV plant in Rajasthan, achieved 133 MW of highest load during the year.

Awards & certifications
The company's Sasan Mine was awarded the National Safety Award (Mines) for the year 2013 & 2014 through DGMS in August 2017 for its commendable safe work environment and safety practices.
