Man responsible for 80 burglaries held

The Basavanagudi police on Friday arrested a 32-year-old habitual offender involved in as many as six cases of house break-ins in the south division. The accused, Syed Ahmed, is a native of Tumakuru. He used to move around as a salesman and identify locked houses, said the police. Once he identified an empty house, he would return at night to steal valuables and other expensive items.

According to the police, after every burglary, he would hire a cab and a call girl. They would pose as a couple and visit jewellery shops to pawn the gold.

The Basavanagudi police identified Ahmed through CCTV footage and arrested him on Friday. They recovered gold jewellery worth ₹28 lakh.

The police say that Ahmed was responsible for as many as 80 cases of break-ins. With every arrest, he would come out on bail in a few months, said a senior police officer.
