Jonjo Shelvey has endured a fairly turbulent two years at Newcastle.

Today marks two years to the day since he joined from Swansea and the midfielder has experienced the almighty highs and the bitterly disappointing lows that most Newcastle United players sample during their time on Tyneside.

The England international made a storming debut against West Ham United but just four months later suffered relegation to the Championship.

After losing his place at the start of the season, Shelvey fought his way back into the side to become one of the linchpins of Newcastle’s promotion bid.

However, his discipline was called into question and after being sent off against Nottingham Forest, Shelvey was slapped with a five-match ban following allegations of racism towards Wolves’ Roman Saiss.

Newcastle won the Championship and Shelvey put in the hard yards over pre-season as he targeted a recall to the England national team.

However, a stamp on Dele Alli put pay to that, as Shelvey was sent off and given a three match ban. Another red card against Everton in December saw him given another two-match ban but he is now back in the side and grabbed his first goal of the season against Luton last weekend.

Despite a roller-coaster ride, the former Swansea midfielder insists he has no regrets about moving to Newcastle, professing his love for the city and the supporters.

Reflecting on his two years at the club, Shelvey told NUFC TV: “It is a good place to live. I love the city and the fans are spot on with me around the city.

“It is nice to come in every day with the lads. We have got a great set of lads and to be fair there always has been since I come to the club.

“There has been some ups and downs. I have been relegated, I have been promoted but now I am back in the Premier League but it has been brilliant and I can never say I regret joining Newcastle.”

Despite rumours of him joining West Ham this month, it is expected Shelvey will remain a Newcastle player beyond this month.

He begins his third year as a Newcastle player tomorrow against former club Swansea at St James’ Park.
