"I think it's really important to remember that Medicaid is a basic healthcare that goes almost entirely to children and to people to our seniors, our grandmothers and grandfathers, and then to people who live with significant disabilities," Smith said.
The federal farm bill is on the docket this year for lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Smith touched on this, too.
"Issues that have to do with the sugar program and the dairy program and crop insurance and conservation programs will all be hashed out in the farm bill, and I'll be able to bring Minnesota values and Minnesota interests to bear on that," Smith said.
The Farm Bill sets agricultural and food policy for the United States for five years.
Smith is on the Senate Committee on Agriculture committee along with Senator John Thune from South Dakota. Smith also talked about a huge upcoming event that will happen in her state, one that is also known for annually bringing human trafficking to its site.
"The Super Bowl, which is such a great event for Minnesota, I think is also an opportunity for people to pay attention to this and to be aware that is a terrible thing that happens to young girls," Smith said.
