Spurs are currently being linked with the likes of Paris St-Germain ace Lucas Moura and Brazil sensation Malcom of Bordeaux.
The north Londoners have not been at their best this season and could perhaps do with some new arrivals this month.
But Pochettino is well aware how difficult deals are in January, highlighting the complexities of the major stories that have been so prominent already this month.
He said: “If you want to sign players that you are going to use and help you, it’s difficult to find this opportunity.
"Or it’s the case, like Liverpool and Barcelona, there is a lot of money and you cannot stop the player, like [Philippe] Coutinho or [Virgil] Van Dijk.
"Or it’s a player with six months left on the contract and maybe that is an opportunity like all the rumours now about [Arsenal star] Alexis [Sanchez].

Pochettino has also hailed Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy following his recent comments about the club’s plans going forward.

But Levy insisted yesterday that he is ‘100 per cent certain’ Spurs will not sell any of the players they want to keep at the club no matter what offers may come in.
Pochettino added: “The chairman is the chairman. It's the chairman who manages everything.
"I think for the fans, it's so important to listen to him. If he was talking in this way, it's because he is confident to deliver it for the club."
Tottenham, currently fifth in the Premier League table, take on Everton at Wembley tomorrow evening.
