Thinking about sex? Think about PrEP' - D.C. Department of Health's campaign to control HIV gets mixed reactions
The D.C. Department of Health's latest campaign aims at checking the spread of HIV by promoting the use of a pill called PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis).

The ad which has been running on local TV, starts with a woman licking on an ice cream, a man gently rubbing his golf stick, a woman peeling a banana, etc, all suggestive gestures pointing towards one central idea – 'Sex'. Then, towards the conclusion of the ad, an erotic female voice says: "Thinking about sex? Then think about PrEP".

However, the campaign has received a wave of mixed reactions as it packs in numerous sexual innuendos in less than a minute of duration. While some have found the ad hilarious, others consider it to be in bad taste.

Well, regardless of all the negative reviews, D.C. Health is plain happy that at least people are watching it.

Interestingly, Washington has one of the highest HIV rates in the United States. Almost 2 per cent of D.C.'s population is living with HIV, way more than the World Health Organization's (WHO) definition of 1 per cent as generalized epidemic.

And, hence arose the need for such an aggressive campaign for raising awareness among people and reducing the transmission of HIV by more than 90 per cent. The daily pill, PrEP is USFDA-approved and comes with recommendation from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

Many might complain that the District department is playing with their minds, but then, for a good reason, isn't it?
