AUSTRALIAN pop star Troye Sivan admitted he freaked out working with Nicole Kidman on the set of gay conversion drama Boy Erased.

The film, directed by Joel Edgerton and based on the book by Garrad Conley, also stars Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and Lucas Hedges.

It is due for release in September this year.

"It was gnarly but it was a really good time and kind of my first time acting in a little while," Sivan told Zane Lowe on a Beats 1 interview airing today.

"I got the script for Boy Erased and I was just like 'Oh my gosh I have to be a part of this'.

Sivan told Lowe he freaked out meeting Kidman, who he only shares one scene with.

"I had a scene with Nicole, technically. She plays Lucas's mum. She comes to pick him up from the camp one day and I'm there in the background freaking out that that's Nicole Kidman.

"I try to speak in my most Australian accent as well so she would be like 'Are you Australian?' so we had something to talk about. It didn't work. I just sounded like an idiot."

Sivan released his new song My My My! yesterday; the track is No. 11 on iTunes in Australia and has already had close to 1.5 million You Tube views.

Today it entered at No. 4 on the worldwide iTunes chart today, behind Camila Cabello, Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars.

The openly gay 22 year old said the new song was inspired by being "super super in love and just really really happy."

"I've never written, I don't think, a happy song before I started writing this album. I think as well, a lot of the first album for me was just like coming out to myself and coming out to the world and all of that stuff. Now it's like I feel I just am and I just want to celebrate that."

Sivan will release a new album this year.

His previous acting work included X: Men Origins: Wolverine
