HARBOR SPRINGS — Kal O'Brien netted 19 points to help the Mackinaw City boys basketball team earn a critical 57-48 victory over Harbor Light in a Northern Lakes Conference showdown on Thursday.

The Comets (5-3, 4-1), who led 14-8 after one quarter, upped their lead to 32-20 by halftime. After three, the Comets held an 11-point advantage.

(Thursday) was a full-out war with two teams battling for their conference lives, and in the end it came down to the simplicity of making some free throws," said Mackinaw City coach John Martin. "When you go into Harbor, you can always expect Jason (Roussin) to have his team well prepared and to battle you for 32 minutes. Tonight was as expected — a 32-minute battle."

The Comets knocked down 7-of-8 attempts from the free throw line in the fourth to seal the win.

Hunter Malczynski also reached double figures, netting 13 points, while Jarred Hartman had nine, Logan Smith had seven, Robert Martin had five, and Evan Cronk had four.

Mackinaw City will travel to face Maplewood Baptist in a NLC matchup on Tuesday.
