ALLAHABAD: With an eye on the upcoming Phulpur bypoll and to arrest Bharatiya Janata Party's winning spree, the District Congress Committee has once again appealed to the party high command to encourage Priyanka Vadra to enter active politics.

Congress members celebrated Congress president Rahul Gandhi's sister Priyanka Vadra's 46th birthday in the city on Friday. While celebrating in front of Anand Bhawan, the ancestral house of the Gandhis, Congress members shouted slogans and carried posters featuring slogans like "door karo Congress ka vanvas, Rahul bhaiya, Priyanka didi—Aap mai aas" (We have faith that both Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Vadra could bring back Congress from exile").

A Congress member said, "If Priyanka Vadra joins active politics, it would boost the morale of Congress leaders and workers across the nation and the party would be able to win the Phulpur by-election, which was once a Nehru-Gandhi bastion. It would also help workers bring the party back from the exile."

Leading the campaign, Congress leader Haseeb Ahmad said, "We have been raising our voices to bring Priyanka back into active politics for the more than three years. If she takes a lead in the Phulpur by-election, we would not only be able to stop the winning spree of BJP but would also be able to restore the party's old glory."

Former corporator Nafees Ahmad said, "Priyanka Vadra and Rahul Gandhi, together, can do wonders for Congress in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls."

Congress leaders said that they would be writing a letter to the party high command to look into their proposal.
