Bulldogs take opener at Boomtown

BURKBURNETT – Seth Donaghey scored twice Thursday afternoon against Springtown, helping Burkburnett claim a 3-0 victory in the opening game of the Boomtown Invitational.

Donaghey’s first strike gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the 21stminute and came off a Cole Jones assist. Burkburnett doubled its lead in the 34th minute when Will Louis scored after Ruben Lugo-Garza set him up.

Donaghey converted Anthony Gauthier’s corner kick in the second half to finish off the Porcupines and give Burkburnett (1-1) its first win of the young season.

“It was nice to get this win in our tournament,” Burkburnett coach Robert Daiker said. “The weather was really brutal, but the boys were able to focus and put a few away.”

Burkburnett advances to face Gainesville in Friday’s noon semifinal. The Leopards were tied with Stephenville 3-3 after regulation Thursday, but they advanced by winning the penalty kick shootout, 7-6.

Lubbock Cooper scored twice in the second half to take down Hirschi 3-1 in the tournament’s third game of the day. The Huskies will face the Graham-Pampa loser at 6 p.m. Friday.

Coyotes get canceled

Wintry weather kept the Wichita Falls High School boys soccer team from taking the field Thursday in Denton’s Bridge Classic.That game against Cleburne has been canceled, but the Coyotes (0-5-1) return to action Friday at 5:30 p.m. against North Crowley.
