Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister of State for Fisheries, Youth Empowerment and Sports, said on Thursday that it was essential to create more awareness about consumer rights.

He was speaking after inaugurating the National Consumer Rights Day function organised by the district administration, the zilla panchayat, and other organisations, here.

Mr. Madhwaraj said that school and college students should also be told about consumer rights. It was only when the aggrieved consumers fought for their rights when the product or service rendered to them was not upto the mark that they could get justice.

The process of creating awareness should start from the schools and colleges, he said.

The consumers had full rights to get complete information about the products they purchased from shops. They should also get information about the safety aspects of the products, she said.

M.R. Bhat, Deputy Director of Food and Civil Supplies, welcomed the gathering. A.P. Kodancha, Trustee of Udupi Consumers’ Forum, delivered a lecture on the occasion.

Meenakshi Bannanje, president of Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC), H. Shantharam, administrative officer, Academy of General Education, K. Damodar Aithal, convener of Udupi Consumers’ Forum, were present.
