In one of the more unusual but timely finds of summer police are looking for the owner of a large swimming pool.

In a post on Facebook dripping with puns police say despite going to "great lengths" to track the owner, they now needed a different type of stroke to solve the mystery.

"We're making a splash with this appeal in the hope we can find the owner of a swimming pool, which has been recovered by Hawke's Bay Police.

"We've already gone to great lengths to track the person(s) down – and we know we need a stroke of luck to find them."
