Police identified the suspect as 23-year-old Jonathan Bennett.
Officers had been searching for Bennett for hours. He was accused of killing the mother of his infant daughter in west Charlotte earlier Thursday.
WSOC-TV reporter DaShawn Brown reported hearing about a dozen shots and seeing a body in the middle of CMPD’s parking lot shortly before 11 p.m. She and a station photographer were outside police headquarters for a live report, she said.
Brown said the female officer was expected to be OK.
Police confirmed in a tweet at 11:30 p.m. that an officer had been shot.
The WSOC-TV photographer reported seeing a person approach and shoot the officer.
“The only thing I could think about was to take cover,” Brown reported on the station’s 11 p.m. newscast. “I saw officers scrambling. I looked and saw flashes from a gun. I’m not sure, but it seemed like a dozen shots.”
Police cordoned off the entire headquarters. Officers lined East Trade Street and North Davidson Street.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
